Cou, Cou!! Marta

Launch of the international FIAN Campaign

For the Human Right to Food

FACE IT - ACT NOW!

Press Conference

On the occasion of the World Food Day 2007

dedicated to "The Human Right to Food"

Monday OCTOBER 15th at 2.00 pm

European Parliament, Press Room

Brussels, Belgium

Chronic hunger --in a world of abundance-- is a silent scandal. It is unacceptable that in a world of plenty over 850 millions of children, women and men go to bed hungry every day.

Food is a human right, just like freedom of expression, freedom of torture or the right to a fair trail. Already back in 1948 --as a result of centuries of struggle for dignity, against oppression and discrimination-- the United Nations approved the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It recognises food as a human right equal to all other rights.

The World Food Day 2007 (October 16) is dedicated to the "Human Right to Food". FIAN has taken the initiative to launch on this occasion the international Right to Food Campaign "Face It - Act Now!", which will be presented at the joint press conference with Jean Ziegler, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food and author of "The Empire of Shame".

SPEAKERS:

JEAN ZIEGLER

UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food

Author of "The Empire of Shame"

LUISA MORGANTINI

Vice President of the European Parliament

FLAVIO VALENTE

Secretary General, FIAN International

SIGRUN SKOGLY (tbc)

President, FIAN International

Professor for International Human Rights Law at Lancaster University

Press contact:
